Developed Exp 2 Environment

Cousteau
Cousteau’s space is open and fluid, to be in harmony with, and show respect for, nature. Cousteau’s curious and adventurous nature and his drive for knowledge is represented by an unknown terrain (the ramp) that confidently reaches out in search for knowledge, then withdraws to reflect on what has been learnt, then reaches out for more knowledge again.

Ramp: The linear nature of the ramp forward represents the determined and sure nature of Cousteau’s exploration for knowledge. It reaches up to the light like reaching towards knowledge. The curves in the path represent Cousteau’s respect for nature, trying to be in harmony with it while unearthing it’s mysterious. Knowledge can be a slow thing to gain and yet there are times when it comes rapidly, the small incline of the ramp representing this slow general nature and the curves in the ramp the periods of rapid increase in knowledge. Further the curves must be jumped in the game, representing the need for leaps of faith in learning and the determination and persistence needed to conquer the unknown. The ridged texture on the ramp represents the unknown terrain. Different section of this texture do not match up to each other to represent that the terrain in always different and even if there are similarities and there for cannot be predicted.
From the meeting place looking up, the ramp is dark except form patches of purple light. This represents unknown knowledge. The purple light that also illuminate the ramp from above adds a sense of mystery and intrigue.

The golden light within the laboratory spaces creates a space for gathering, and reflecting on, knowledge.

Meeting place

Purple lights are used to represent the search for more knowledge, a drive that Cousteau and Nobel shared.

Nobel

Nobel’s space is small and dark to represent a withdrawal from society after his invention of dynamite. The Imposing rectangles create a regretful, uneasy feeling over what he (Nobel) has created and the memories and consequences of his work.

Ramp: A sense of unease and regret is continued through the ramp by the changing slope. The decline of the ramp represents the withdrawal of Nobel. The lighting changes from purple, representing the unknown knowledge waiting on the outside, to blue, representing the withdrawal and regret from the invention of dynamite - this feeling being continued in Nobel’s space.

The floor texture reinforces the uneasy feeling from imposing memories and regrets. The cracked concrete texture from Unreal represents the consequences of his work, globally and personally - the lost of his younger brother.
